Arunachal: Rs 1.75 crores allocated for new indigenous prayer center in Naharlagun

In a concerted effort to safeguard the rich cultural heritage and faith of the indigenous communities, the Department of Indigenous Affairs has sanctioned Rs 1.75 crores for the construction of a new Prayer Center, known as Nyedar Namlo. The inauguration ceremony for the new executive committee of Donyi Polo Khumko Nyedar Namlo, Naharlagun, for the session 2024-2027, marked the transition of responsibilities. Held at Nyedar Namlo in the Naharlagun sector, this event symbolized the commitment to uphold and promote the indigenous faith of the region, particularly in the worship of Donyi Polo, where “donyi” signifies the sun and “polo” signifies the moon. Minister Er Taba Tedir of the Department of Indigenous Affairs allocated ₹1.75 crores for the construction of the new Nyedar Namlo building. The first phase of construction has commenced with an allocation of ₹87 lakhs this year.

The ceremony was graced by esteemed guests, Dr. Nabam Tata, Advisor, and Prof. Hui Tag, Vice Chairman of Reyang Yerkum Pwglang. Former committee members Tarh Tata and Gyamar Nima distributed appreciation certificates to believers, emphasizing the significance of Nyedar Namlo in preserving indigenous faith. Senior journalist Bengia Augung underscored the importance of Nyedar Namlo as a bastion of indigenous culture and traditions. The newly appointed executive committee, led by Chairman Ator Tania Doni and Vice Chairman Honipa Sono Yangfo, reiterated their commitment to safeguarding ancestral beliefs and cultural heritage. Prof. Hui Tag emphasized the need for adherence to rules and regulations during prayers and gatherings at Nyedar Namlo, stressing the importance of preserving the sanctity of the prayer hall.

Dr. Nabam Tata highlighted the threat posed by the encroaching wave of westernization, which endangers indigenous languages and traditions. He urged the community to actively preserve their cultural identity by passing down traditions, language, and customs to future generations. Vice Chairman Honipa Sono Yangfo emphasized that Nyedar Namlo serves as more than just a prayer center; it is a sanctuary where the collective memory of ancestors’ beliefs, culture and traditions is kept alive.
