Arunachal’s traditional houses face extinction amid clash of values

In Arunachal Pradesh, a clash between tradition and modernity threatens the survival of traditional houses crafted from bamboo and grass, cherished by the Galos, Nyishis, Adis, and Apatanis. These architectural gems, once emblematic of cultural heritage, now teeter on the brink of extinction as younger generations prioritize perceived notions of progress over ancestral traditions. The traditional Galo house, an architectural marvel constructed with indigenous materials like wood, bamboo, cane, and palm leaves, stands as a testament to centuries-old craftsmanship. Residing primarily in the West and Lower Siang districts, the Galos, descendants of the illustrious Abotani, have long inhabited villages nestled along riversides and hillsides, with careful consideration given to water access and fertile land.

However, the allure of modernity, embodied by concrete structures deemed safer and more resilient to fire hazards, has led to the gradual disappearance of these traditional dwellings. Biba Gadi, a resident of Leparada district, underscores the sentimental and cultural significance of these houses, lamenting their decline as symbols of status and pride. Despite efforts to preserve ancestral practices, the dwindling interest in traditional craftsmanship exacerbates the threat of extinction. The loss of skilled artisans and the waning appeal among educated youth further exacerbate the challenge of sustaining these architectural treasures.

Yet, amidst the encroaching tide of modernization, pockets of resistance endure. Some residents, even amid urbanization, continue to erect grass-thatched bamboo houses, valuing their natural cooling properties and cultural resonance. Leparada MLA Gokar Basar echoes the sentiment of cultural preservation, emphasizing the intrinsic value of traditional houses beyond mere shelter. He advocates for a harmonious coexistence of modern and traditional architecture, recognizing the irreplaceable sense of community and heritage fostered within these time-honored structures.
