Tata Motors empowers women through the traditional handicraft of ‘Chikankari’

Tata Motors Samaj Vikas Kendra (SVK) has been instrumental in helping women in rural India to master the craft of ‘Chikankari’ and organize themselves into groups to run successful business ventures. The project has led to over 150 women forming Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and engaging in credit and thrift activities, mobilizing Rs.25 lakhs over the past 16 years.

Tata Motors’ CSR Head, Vinod Kulkarni, highlighted the success of the SHG Federation program, which empowers women to develop their own enterprises, leading to financial freedom and socioeconomic upliftment. He emphasized the importance of gender equality and empowerment for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

SVK began in 2007 with a two-pronged strategy to revive handicrafts and link them to women’s social economic development. They established a dedicated training center for women from 15 villages, equipping them with the necessary skills and market trends. Tata Motors also helped these women leverage various welfare schemes run by the Government of Uttar Pradesh to enhance their skills and generate income. These women have not only achieved financial freedom but also fostered social change, breaking down societal barriers and paving the way for gender equality.
