ICICI Bank’s CSR revives Bihar’s ancient ahar-pyne irrigation, boosts local agriculture

ICICI Foundation, the CSR arm of ICICI Bank, is reviving traditional ahar-pyne water harvesting systems in Bihar, tackling water scarcity and supporting sustainable agriculture. This initiative, implemented in Gaya district, involves the restoration of ancient floodwater systems to enhance irrigation and provide safe drinking water, particularly benefiting Danapur Cantonment in Patna. Over 250,000 residents now have improved water access, helping reduce waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid.

In 2024, the foundation revitalized three ahars in Belaganj and one in Barachatti, adding 56.73 million liters of water capacity, allowing irrigation over 5,250 acres and benefiting 2,100 farmers. This upgrade is crucial for local agriculture, enabling farmers to grow multiple crops yearly and reducing drought-related disruptions.

For Gaya, the restored irrigation systems are expected to yield positive economic impacts, especially in agricultural productivity. Reliable water supply supports crop diversity and stability, enhancing food availability and strengthening Gaya’s market as a key supplier of locally grown produce. The boost in agricultural output is anticipated to benefit local commerce, driving demand and economic resilience. Beyond irrigation, ICICI Foundation’s environmental efforts extend to 53 forests across 19 states, including Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve, enhancing biodiversity and supporting local communities.
