Majibur Rahman gets life imprisonment for 2008 double m*rder in Itanagar

A court in Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of two sisters in 2008. The verdict, delivered by Sessions Judge Hirendra Kashyap at the Yupia court, also imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on the convict, Majibur Rahman alias Atabur Rahman. The sentencing comes after an extensive 11-year manhunt, which ended with Rahman’s arrest in January 2025. The case had remained a high-profile investigation for over a decade due to the gruesome nature of the crime and the convict’s daring escape from custody. On June 6, 2008, Rahman murdered two sisters who ran a beauty parlour at Ganga Market in Itanagar. He was initially arrested on September 3, 2008, but on August 24, 2012, he managed to escape from judicial custody along with two other prisoners, evading law enforcement for years.

His criminal record extends beyond the 2008 murder, with multiple theft and robbery cases across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. During his years as a fugitive, Rahman changed his identity multiple times, moving between Kerala, Karnataka, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. He is believed to have stayed in Majuli, Narayanpur, and Lakhimpur while working under false identities. Authorities finally tracked him down using electronic and human surveillance, leading to his arrest. Itanagar Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh credited the Capital Police team’s persistent efforts in bringing Rahman to justice.

“This conviction not only marks the culmination of a long-standing investigation but also reinforces the dedication and perseverance of the Capital Police team in ensuring justice is served,” SP Singh stated. Rahman’s sentencing brings closure to a case that had haunted the victims’ families for nearly 17 years, underscoring the commitment of Arunachal Pradesh’s law enforcement to delivering justice despite the passage of time.
