International conclave on Buddha Dhamma from April 21–22 to be held in Arunachal

In April 21–22, 2025, the Multipurpose Cultural Hall in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, will host a two-day international conclave titled “Buddha Dhamma and the Culture of North-East India,” organized by the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The purpose of the event is to draw attention to the long-lasting impact of Buddhist legacy and philosophy in North-East India, an area rich in many Buddhist traditions. Prominent luminaries are anticipated to attend the summit, including Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu and the state’s deputy chief minister, Shri Chowna Mein.

For the Theravāda, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayāna schools of Buddhism, North-East India—which includes Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura—is an essential center. The conclave will delve into the region’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, which has been crucial in fostering and spreading Buddhist teachings from their inception under Emperor Ashoka. With a focus on the historical relevance of Buddha Dhamma in the region, its influence on local art and culture, and the common cultural linkages between North-East India and adjacent countries inspired by Buddhism, the two-day program will begin with a series of panel discussions on the first day.

The second day of the conclave will focus on spiritual practice, including a Vipassana meditation session and a peace prayer ceremony at the Golden Pagoda. The conclave aligns with India’s efforts to promote Buddhist heritage tourism and cultural diplomacy. The IBC, a global organization representing monastic and lay Buddhist communities, aims to unify Buddhist perspectives and uphold values.
