Phek District Hosts Kisan Mela and Brainstorming Meet on Dairy Development

A Kisan Mela cum Brainstorming Session focused on Dairy Sector Development in Nagaland was held at the ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM) in Phek district. This event gathered policymakers, scientists, dairy experts, and farmers to devise a detailed roadmap for advancing the dairy sector within the state. The Chief Guest, Kudecho Khamo, Adviser for CAWD & Taxes, emphasized the importance of implementing scientific practices, enhancing dairy cooperatives, and establishing effective value chains to improve farmers’ income and promote self-reliance in milk production in Nagaland. He commended the collaborative efforts of ICAR and the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services for their structured approach to development.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh welcomed participants and introduced Dr. Girish Patil S., Director of ICAR–NRC on Mithun, who expressed the need for research-driven interventions and supportive institutions to elevate the dairy sector. Additional remarks were made by notable participants including Dr. Pritpal Kaur, Superintendent of Police, Phek; Dr. Imomanen Tzudir, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Government of Nagaland; and Rhosietho Nguori, Deputy Commissioner of Phek.

The technical session featured the theme “Roadmap for Development of Dairy Sector in Nagaland,” with expert presentations by Dr. Kathiravan Periasamy, who provided an overview of the dairy landscape in Nagaland; Dr. A. Sirohi discussed scientific dairy farming innovations; and Dr. Sivakumar presented strategies to strengthen the dairy value chain. Participating chairmen from various dairy cooperatives such as DIMUL, KOMUL, and MOMUL contributed insights into the sector’s challenges and prospects.

The event culminated in a round-table discussion that involved experts from ICAR, the State Animal Husbandry Department, Nagaland Livestock Development Board, dairy cooperatives, and farmers, culminating in the review and dialogue regarding a draft roadmap for the dairy sector’s development in Nagaland.
