Heated Debate in Nagaland Assembly as ‘Vande Mataram’ Directive Sent to Select Committee

The Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) has referred the Union government’s directive to recite “Vande Mataram” before the National Anthem to a Select Committee after a heated debate among legislators. Speaker Sharingain Longkumer confirmed the assembly’s receipt of the directive, acknowledging strong objections, particularly concerning its alignment with Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards local traditions. Legislators expressed varied opinions during the discussion, with voices like Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu opposing the directive as an imposition on Christian faith. In contrast, BJP legislator Temjen Imna Along urged respect for the song’s historical context, emphasizing the importance of secularism. The Nagaland Joint Christian Forum opposed the directive, arguing it conflicts with local religious beliefs and urging the Government of India to respect minority rights. This debate aligns with national discussions regarding “Vande Mataram” as its 150th anniversary approaches. Speaker Longkumer also noted the recent Memorandum of Agreement on the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority as a positive development for eastern Nagaland.
