Itanagar Authorities Withdraw Nod for AAPSU Polls Amid Tension

The Itanagar district administration has retracted permission for the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) elections and conference, citing escalating law and order issues stemming from recent violent clashes between opposing candidates. The Deputy Commissioner’s Office formally annulled the previously granted approval for the AAPSU Election and Conference, which was scheduled to take place at the Jubilee Hall of Dera Natung Government College from February 17 to 23, 2026. This approval was initially issued on February 5, 2026, and included conditions under which the Chief Election Commissioner Nabam Tamar could conduct the election process.

The revocation was deemed necessary due to a deterioration in local law and order conditions following violent altercations among candidates, leading to heightened fears of potential disturbances if the event continued as planned. The district administration had previously retained the authority to suspend or cancel the electoral process at any point, contingent on the state of the law and order situation.

Additionally, the administration considered the upcoming Sixth Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh, taking place from March 6 to March 12, 2026, emphasizing the need for a secure environment in the state capital to facilitate this critical budget session. An official statement from the Deputy Commissioner’s office clarified that, given the circumstances and the risk of further disturbances, the earlier permission had been withdrawn with immediate effect, rendering it time-barred.
