Violence Ahead of Polls in Mokokchung Turns Fatal

Pre-election violence in Longkhum village claimed one life and left several others injured ahead of the April 9 by-election to the 28-Koridang Assembly constituency.

According to police sources, clashes broke out between supporters of rival candidates late Sunday night, leading to stone-pelting in the village. Three individuals sustained injuries and were initially admitted to Dr. Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital. One of them, identified as Imrongsungba Imchen (38), a resident of Artang ward, later succumbed to his injuries while being referred to Dimapur for advanced treatment.

Officials stated that confirmation regarding the exact circumstances leading to his death was still awaited at the time of reporting.

Police have arrested 16 individuals in connection with the clash. Authorities confirmed that while the situation is currently under control, tension continues to prevail in the area.

In a separate incident at Mangmetong village, unidentified miscreants vandalised at least 12 vehicles on Monday morning. No injuries were reported. During subsequent search operations, security forces recovered arms and ammunition and arrested one suspect.

In response to the escalating violence, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Ajit Kumar Verma revoked permissions for two temporary political offices in Longkhum, citing violations of law and order.

A night curfew has also been imposed in sensitive areas including Longkhum, Mangmetong, and Alichen. The curfew will remain in force daily from 6 pm to 5 am until further orders. Authorities have prohibited gatherings of five or more persons, while exemptions have been granted to essential and emergency services.

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton, who also holds the Home portfolio, strongly condemned the violence and expressed grief over the death of Imchen. He urged citizens to maintain peace and ensure that the democratic process is upheld.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland unit also condemned the incident, describing it as a “brutal and senseless act.” The party called for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible, while appealing for peaceful and fair elections.
