CID Assam busts fake government job racket targeting Water Resources Department aspirants; 7 arrested

The Crime Investigation Department (CID), Assam, has busted an organised job fraud racket that allegedly duped job aspirants by promising government jobs in the Water Resources Department using forged appointment letters and fake recruitment documents.

According to the CID, the accused operated a well-organised network that targeted unemployed youths, collecting amounts ranging from thousands to several lakhs of rupees in exchange for purported government jobs. The gang allegedly issued forged appointment letters, fabricated government seals and fake recruitment notifications in the name of the Water Resources Department, Government of Assam, misleading victims into believing they had secured legitimate employment.

Based on the findings, CID Police Station registered Case No. 04/25 under Sections 61(2), 318(4), 336(3), and 340(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

During a series of coordinated operations, CID Assam arrested seven accused persons in connection with the case. The latest arrest was Gunamoni Baishya, who was apprehended from Nalbari district on June 27, 2026.

The investigation is continuing to identify other individuals linked to the racket and trace the extent of the fraud.

The CID has urged the public to verify all government recruitment notifications only through official channels and cautioned job seekers against making any payment in exchange for promises of government employment.
