First globally previewed as a rugged concept at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year, the patent filing indicates that the South Korean automaker is seriously considering bringing its first-ever dedicated 4X4 to the Indian domestic market. The upcoming vehicle is expected to position itself as a formidable direct challenger to established segment heavyweights, including the Mahindra Thar Roxx and the Force Gurkha.
The patent images reveal a design that remains highly faithful to the boxy, muscular silhouette of the original concept. It retains distinctive styling elements such as an upright windscreen, flat bonnet, squared wheel arches with heavy protective body cladding, and a signature tailgate-mounted spare wheel. The front fascia showcases vertically stacked headlamp assemblies alongside a unique, Morse code-inspired H-shaped lighting signature. While extreme show-car attributes like the oversized 37-inch mud-terrain tires have been toned down for the market-ready iteration, the vehicle maintains its aggressive ground clearance, short overhangs, and highly capable approach and departure angles designed for hardcore trail driving.
Crucially, the Boulder will mark a major engineering shift for Hyundai, serving as the brand’s first vehicle built on a robust, fully boxed ladder-frame chassis instead of its traditional monocoque SUV platforms. Developed for heavy-duty towing, hauling, and serious off-road deployment, this body-on-frame architecture is rumored to support both traditional internal combustion engines and highly localized electric vehicle (EV) powertrains.
