Poor Appetite and Weakness? Know What Ayurveda and Science Say About Pomegranate Juice

For many Indian families, pomegranate juice is one of the first things considered when someone loses their appetite or complains of an unsettled stomach. This traditional practice recently came into focus after Acharya Balkrishna discussed pomegranate in a Facebook video.

The fruit offers more than its familiar sweet and tangy taste. Pomegranate contains polyphenols, antioxidant compounds that have been widely studied, as well as fiber, vitamin C and folate. These nutrients are associated with several aspects of normal digestive and overall health.

Ayurvedic tradition has long included pomegranate among foods used to support appetite and digestion. A traditional preparation combines fresh pomegranate juice with roasted cumin powder and a pinch of rock salt. Honey is sometimes added instead, depending on personal preference.

There is also growing scientific interest in the fruit. Researchers have studied pomegranate extracts and their possible effects on appetite and feelings of fullness. Its plant compounds are also being investigated for their potential role in metabolic health.

Other research has looked at pomegranate juice for antioxidant activity and possible digestive benefits. Pomegranate seed extracts have also been studied for their potential effects on blood pressure and inflammation.

That said, modern research does not automatically validate every traditional use. Pomegranate can be included as part of a healthy diet, but ongoing appetite loss or unexplained weakness may have an underlying medical or nutritional cause and should not be ignored.
