India’s President Murmu pays tribute at Pope Francis’ state funeral, sparks demand for religious items

President Droupadi Murmu led the Indian delegation to Vatican City for the State Funeral of Pope Francis. Accompanied by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Shri George Kurian, and Deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Shri Joshua De Souza, President Murmu arrived in Rome on April 25 and participated in the funeral on April 26.

The passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, has deeply resonated across the world, with India declaring three days of State Mourning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, honoring the late Pope’s deep connection with India. The visit has brought attention to the increasing demand for religious items, as communities worldwide mourn the loss.
