East Siang Residents Step Up Protest Against Alleged Pollution by Niglok Silicon Factory

Residents of East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh are determined to persist in their protests against a silicon factory at the Niglok Industrial Growth Centre, citing the government’s failure to address their concerns regarding air and water pollution. During a recent demonstration at the Ruksin Additional Deputy Commissioner’s office, protestors, including members of the IGC Pollution-Affected People’s Forum, submitted a memorandum and threatened to escalate their movement to an indefinite hunger strike if their demands for relocating the factory are not met. Earlier discussions involving local officials and public representatives attempted to persuade the villagers to halt their protests pending the Central Pollution Control Board’s findings, which they claim have not led to effective pollution mitigation policies. Protestors accuse the factory, run by Aether Alloys LLP, of causing significant health hazards through emissions affecting both air and water quality. In response to these concerns, the National Green Tribunal has taken notice of the allegations and scheduled hearings on the issue.
