Residents Welcome Rain as Hailstorm Breaks Long Dry Period in Nagaland

On Monday evening, parts of Nagaland experienced a significant rainstorm accompanied by hail after enduring over four months of dry weather. The intense downpour, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, affected various regions including Kohima, Dimapur, Tseminyu, and Wokha. This prolonged dry spell, which began at the end of October, caused many natural water sources such as perennial springs, wells, and small streams to dry up, leading to a notable impact on the availability of potable water. The Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department had to reduce water distribution in numerous areas due to this water scarcity.

In contrast to the challenges posed by the dry weather, many residents were seen enjoying the unanticipated rain, with social media showcasing videos and photos of people constructing snowmen from the hailstones. It is noteworthy that the previous year’s monsoon season in 2025 had already resulted in catastrophic events including landslides, mudslides, and flash floods that severely damaged national highways and residential structures across the state. This recent weather pattern highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the region in managing water resources amid drastic weather changes.
