Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) is organizing a mass public rally in Kohima on March 16 to protest against the mandatory singing of Vande Mataram at official events and educational institutions. NSF leaders, Mteisuding Heraang and Kenilo Kent, expressed their concerns over a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs issued on January 28, 2026, which they believe could negatively impact the Naga homeland’s identity and rights. The rally aims to provide a platform for the Naga people to voice their opposition to this compulsory imposition while emphasizing democratic principles reflecting community conscience and will. In conjunction with the rally, NSF has instructed its affiliates across the Naga region to hold peaceful demonstrations, including within educational institutions, to protect the rights of Naga students and reinforce their cultural beliefs.
The Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) has also voiced strong apprehension regarding the Home Ministry’s directive. Its leaders, Lanulemba Longchar and Aomayang Longkumer, supported NSF’s position and highlighted the need for sensitivity regarding the historical and cultural context of the Naga people. AKM insisted that educational institutions should foster inclusive learning and respect for diverse identities, cautioning against enforcing conformity on issues with significant religious or historical resonance. Consequently, AKM directed all educational institutions in Mokokchung district to refrain from mandating the singing or playing of Vande Mataram.
