Under the initiative of the Central Committee of NFR Employees Union, the largest trade union of railway workers and employees of Northeast Frontier Railway, relief materials were distributed among the flood-affected people of Sivasagar district on 29 July. The distribution was carried out with the cooperation of the Tinsukia Divisional Committee and the Simuluguri Branch Committee of the Union.
Led by Munindra Saikia, General Secretary of the Union’s Central Committee and prominent labour leader, the team that travelled from Guwahati reached Sivasagar on that day. In areas including Sivasagar Town, Nazira, Lakua and Simuluguri, the team provided relief to many affected families. The items distributed included masks, sanitizers, mosquito nets, various food items, phenyl, mosquito-repellent coils, medicines for different ailments, sanitary pads and bottles of drinking water.
Along with the Central Committee, members from several branches at the Guwahati and Maligaon Headquarters, as well as officials from the Tinsukia Division and Simuluguri Branch office actively participated in and supported the relief distribution programme.
The flood-affected families warmly welcomed the Employees Union’s initiative.
It may be mentioned that the Employees Union has earlier also carried out various social, humanitarian and public welfare programmes of this kind.
Speaking on the occasion, Union leader Munindra Saikia said:
“It is the duty of every human being to reach out with a kind word and provide humanitarian assistance to the best of one’s ability to people facing crisis during times of disaster.”
