Arunachal Govt Sets Up Committee on Illegal Immigration

The Arunachal Pradesh government has constituted a High-Powered Committee to examine issues related to illegal infiltration and illegal immigration in the state and recommend measures to address the growing concerns.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the formation of the committee on Thursday, describing it as one of four panels proposed after a series of consultations with community-based organisations, civil society groups, student bodies, legal experts and other stakeholders.

According to an official order issued by the Home Department, the committee will be headed by Environment and Forests Minister Wangki Lowang. The Commissioner (Home) will serve as the Member Secretary.

The committee includes representatives from the All Arunachal Tribal Forum (AITF), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), Arunachal ST Bachao Andolan Committee, along with legal experts and academicians. The broad-based representation is aimed at ensuring that different viewpoints are considered while examining the issue.

The panel has been entrusted with studying the extent of illegal infiltration and illegal immigration in Arunachal Pradesh and recommending measures to strengthen border control and monitoring mechanisms. It will also examine the use of biometric and digital verification systems to improve identity checks and documentation processes.

Among its key responsibilities, the committee will look into issues related to forged identity documents, undocumented settlements and the misuse of fake or illegal identity papers. It has been asked to suggest suitable administrative and legal measures to address these concerns while ensuring that all recommendations remain within the framework of existing laws and constitutional provisions.

Chief Minister Khandu said the committee would thoroughly examine all aspects of the issue and propose measures required to protect the interests of the state and its indigenous communities.
