Feral Horses from Assam’s Dibru-Saikhowa National Park Attract Attention in Arunachal’s Lower Dibang Valley

The unexpected appearance of feral horses in the Paglam area of Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Dibang Valley district has attracted the attention of wildlife activists, tourists, and nature enthusiasts.

According to local residents, a herd of feral horses has been roaming the area for the past several months. The horses, believed to have strayed from Assam’s Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, have been seen moving in several groups while grazing across wastelands and riverine grasslands in Paglam.

Wildlife conservationist Biswajeet Tayeng, who recently visited the lower Paglam region, appealed to local residents not to disturb the animals. He said that the presence of the feral horses could help transform the area into an ecotourism destination and generate new livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Tayeng, who is also a consultant with Wildlife Trust of India, said that the sighting of feral horses in Paglam, located near the Lower Mebo area, has gradually started attracting domestic tourists and wildlife enthusiasts.

He urged senior officials of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department to conduct a detailed field study to assess the population, habitat suitability, food patterns, and survival challenges of the feral horses in Lower Dibang Valley.
