The East Siang district administration has launched an eviction drive to remove unauthorised structures from government land in Pasighat town, with officials saying the exercise will continue until encroachments on government land in the township are cleared.
The joint operation was carried out on Thursday by the district administration, Land Revenue Department and police at Pasighat main market. Several structures that had been constructed on government land were removed during the drive.
Officials said the administration would continue the eviction exercise across the township to free government land from unauthorised occupation. The action is part of efforts to address growing concerns over encroachment and land-related issues in the urban area.
The eviction drive followed a meeting held on Wednesday by East Siang Deputy Commissioner Sonalika Jiwani with representatives of the Bogong Banggo Kebang, Bogong Banggo Yameng Kebang, Bogong Banggo Land Action Committee and the All Bogong Students’ Union.
The meeting discussed the issue of encroachment on government land in Pasighat town, along with other matters related to land allotment and management.
During the meeting, Jiwani assured the representatives that the district administration would take action against unauthorised occupation of government land in accordance with the provisions of the Arunachal Pradesh Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 2003.
The administration also decided that land allotment proposals for 2024-25 would be cross-verified as and when the files are returned from the Directorate of Land Management in Itanagar. The verification is expected to help the authorities examine allotment records and address discrepancies, if any, in the land management process.
The issue has also drawn attention from local community and student organisations, which have raised concerns over the use of government land in the town.
East Siang Superintendent of Police Pankaj Lamba appealed to all sections of society to maintain peace and cooperate with the district administration during the eviction process. He also urged people to support the administration’s action against land encroachers and offenders.
