The National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) has called for a statewide general strike on August 15, opposing the observance of India’s Independence Day in the state.
According to a statement issued by the outfit, the strike will begin at 1 am and continue until 5 pm on August 15. NRFM Information and Publicity Secretary, Central Headquarters, Sanajaoba Meitel, appealed to people across Manipur to support and observe the shutdown.
However, essential services, including fire and emergency services, medical and healthcare facilities, and the media, have been kept outside the purview of the strike.
The outfit alleged that successive policies of the Government of India have undermined Manipur’s political status and territorial integrity. It further claimed that the people of the state have faced prolonged political and economic exploitation.
Questioning the observance of August 15 as Independence Day in Manipur, the NRFM said the day should instead serve as a reminder of what it described as the unresolved political status of the state.
The proposed shutdown comes amid continuing political sensitivities surrounding Manipur’s territorial integrity and political status.
