Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has demanded immediate intervention from the Central Government regarding the severe drought situation in Karnataka and the extreme plight of farmers. Informing this through the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday, he stated that he has sent a detailed letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting urgent financial assistance and relief for the state. Simultaneously, he has sent a separate letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the same issue.
According to the Congress President, this devastating drought has led to large-scale crop failure, and more than 31 lakh farmer families are facing extreme distress. To revive the affected farmers during such a crisis, the Karnataka government has sought ₹3,705.30 crore in assistance from the Central Government under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
In the letter to the PM, Kharge said, “This aid should be released as soon as possible, prioritizing the actual situation and needs of Karnataka, without being influenced by any political considerations. The Centre needs to adopt a sensitive approach toward the tears and crisis of more than 31 lakh farmer families in the state.”
Urging to view the issue from a humanitarian perspective beyond politics, the senior politician added, “Providing relief to people affected by drought is a humanitarian necessity. It should not be dragged into any political differences between the Centre and the State. I hope that the Government of India will take steps with great urgency and sensitivity to provide timely and appropriate assistance to Karnataka.” By making the letter public on social media, Kharge demanded several important measures from the Central Government for the drought-affected people.
