SEBI Introduces Updated Closing Auction Guidelines to Enhance Transparency and Efficiency

The Securities and Exchange Board of India has officially announced comprehensive revisions to the closing auction session framework, introducing significant modifications to settlement methodologies, trading timelines, and the handling of unexecuted iceberg orders to enhance market transparency and efficiency. Under the updated guidelines, the regulatory body has maintained the established approach where the settlement price for index derivatives is calculated using the volume-weighted average prices of constituent securities during the final thirty minutes of the continuous trading session, running from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM in the equity cash segment. Similarly, for expiring stock derivatives, designated clearing corporations will determine final settlement prices by evaluating the volume-weighted average prices of the underlying stocks across all active stock exchanges throughout that same thirty-minute closing window. To ensure market participants maintain complete visibility and can make informed trading decisions, stock exchanges are mandated to provide the computed volume-weighted average prices along with aggregate traded quantities directly to clearing corporations while continuously broadcasting real-time indicative pricing values throughout the session. These structured modifications aim to reduce closing volatility, minimize potential market manipulation risks, and provide greater certainty for institutional and retail investors navigating derivative expiry settlements. Designed to modernize the regulatory landscape, the revised framework strengthens risk management practices across national exchanges while establishing uniform operational standards for all market participants engaging in equity derivatives trading. Market infrastructure institutions are currently updating their technical systems and clearing mechanisms to ensure seamless compliance with the newly introduced protocols, which are expected to fortify overall market integrity and bolster investor confidence during high-volume closing hours.
