SpaceX Calls Off Starship Megarocket Launch

SpaceX called off the scheduled test flight of its Starship megarocket on Sunday, citing a need to address technical issues with ground systems. The launch, planned from the Starbase facility in Texas at 6:30 pm local time, was scrubbed just 15 minutes before liftoff. Though launch delays are not uncommon, this marks yet another setback for Elon Musk’s ambitious rocket, which has seen a string of explosive failures. A new launch attempt could occur Monday or Tuesday, according to road closure notices and a countdown on SpaceX’s website.

The tenth test was intended to assess the upper stage’s capabilities before the booster stage splashed down in the Indian Ocean. Starship, central to Musk’s Mars colonization plans and NASA’s lunar missions, has seen its upper stage explode during all three 2025 test flights, raising doubts about its reliability.

Despite partial successes like catching the booster with launch tower arms, the upper stage has yet to deliver a payload or return successfully. Analysts are beginning to question the project’s viability. While SpaceX embraces a “fail fast, learn fast” approach, critics warn Starship faces major technical and operational challenges before it can fulfill its goals.
