Sikkimese filmmaker Tribeny Rai’s ‘Shape of Momos’ screened at IFFI

‘Shape of Momos’ is the debut feature by Sikkimese filmmaker Tribeny Rai, showcased at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The film, rooted in Sikkim’s cultural landscape, explores women’s experiences and reflects the director’s personal journey. Rai highlighted the challenges of filmmaking in the nascent Sikkimese industry, including sourcing equipment from major cities. Despite infrastructural hurdles, the film has gained recognition at several international festivals, including Busan. Producer Kislay praised the film’s authenticity, advocating for greater representation of Sikkim in cinema, while lead actor Gaumaya Gurung celebrated the film’s rare female perspective. The team faces distribution challenges, targeting a release in Sikkim and beyond, and Rai emphasized the need for a supportive network for independent filmmakers in the region, aiming to portray Sikkimese as protagonists in their own narratives, countering stereotypes prevalent in mainstream Indian cinema.
