Nagaland University researchers from the Law Department have proposed a ‘Digital Rehabilitation Law’ to integrate AI, telemedicine, and mobile health technologies into India’s drug addiction recovery system. This pioneering study highlights the shortcomings of traditional rehabilitation systems, which are often inaccessible and stigmatized, and emphasizes the need for enhanced rehabilitation within national health policies. The research evaluates existing legal frameworks, such as the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, identifying gaps in privacy, consent, and algorithmic transparency. Dr. Rumi Dhar asserts that the proposed law aims to align current regulations with technological advancements while ensuring patient rights and dignity in addiction treatment.
