Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his gratitude to the 76 families of Karko village for signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government, enabling the preparation of a Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP). Khandu praised this gesture on social media, emphasizing that it reflects trust, awareness, and a responsible attitude towards the future of Arunachal Pradesh and the nation. He asserted the project’s significance, highlighting its role in infrastructure development, energy security, flood modulation, and regional growth aligned with national strategic interests.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the project’s advancement relies on dialogue, informed participation, and respect for local communities, ensuring a comprehensive consideration of environmental and social concerns throughout all stages. He acknowledged the maturity and cooperation of Karko residents, mentioning that their support showcases the balance between development and community voices, thereby ensuring progress benefits the people while safeguarding their land, culture, and national priorities.
The formal signing of the MoU occurred at the Meeting Hall of the DC Bungalow in Yingkiong, with attendance from various stakeholders, including Upper Siang District Deputy Commissioner Talo Jerang representing the government. The agreement was signed by Dumiin Nokar on behalf of the Karko residents, in the presence of local officials and community members. This event represents a significant milestone in the preparatory phase of the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, which underscores informed consent, continuous dialogue, and active community engagement while addressing environmental and social issues comprehensively.
