Nagaland Cabinet Reviews Frontier Talks, Moves Forward on Oil and Land Policies

The Nagaland Cabinet recently made crucial policy decisions addressing the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation’s (ENPO) demand for Frontier Nagaland Territory, the exploration of oil and natural gas, and landholding reforms. Government spokesperson K G Kenye highlighted the Cabinet’s optimism for progress on the ENPO’s decade-long demand, anticipating fruitful discussions with the Government of India scheduled in New Delhi. To enhance political engagement, a sub-committee was formed within the Political Affairs Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, to collaborate on constitutional matters.

Additionally, a delegation addressed concerns regarding the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the Protected Area Permit (PAP), seeking a review due to its adverse effects on the region. The Cabinet also revisited the issue of oil and gas exploration, which had faced delays owing to court proceedings. With the resolution of related litigation, progress will advance, backed by Article 371A, emphasizing local ownership of natural resources.

Moreover, the Cabinet is set to implement reforms in Nagaland’s landholding system, introducing new directives for the registration and regulation of non-cadastral and government-occupied lands to enhance clarity, accountability, and sustainability in land management. Detailed notifications on these reforms are anticipated shortly.
