Sikkim Snowfall Warning: Road to Nathula Blocked; Tourists Not Allowed at Tsomgo Lake

Travel plans for tourists heading to the Indo-China border have been hit by a sudden change in weather as fresh snowfall continues to lash the higher reaches of East Sikkim. Authorities have announced strict travel restrictions along the historic Nathula Pass route, citing blocked roads and hazardous driving conditions.

Official reports say that heavy snow has covered large parts of Jawaharlal Nehru Road, making it impossible for cars to go beyond a certain point. For safety reasons, the Sikkim government has only allowed cars to go as far as the famous Tsomgo Lake. Travel permits for places farther north and east, like Baba Mandir and the Nathula Pass, are on hold until the weather gets better and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) clears the snow that has built up. According to official reports, heavy snowfall has covered large stretches of the Jawaharlal Nehru Road, making the terrain beyond a certain point inaccessible for vehicles. As a safety precaution, the Sikkim administration has permitted vehicular movement only up to the iconic Tsomgo Lake. All travel permits for areas further north and east, including Baba Mandir and the Nathula Pass, have been temporarily suspended until the weather stabilizes and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) clears the accumulated snow.

Traffic officials stressed that the high-altitude area is currently experiencing bad weather, with roads that are hard to see and slippery. A checkpoint has been set up to keep an eye on and control the flow of traffic to keep commuters safe and avoid accidents. People who are currently at Tsomgo Lake are being told to go back to Gangtok before nightfall to avoid getting stuck if the temperature drops even more.

The Border Roads Organization has already sent heavy equipment and workers to clear the roads that are blocked by snow. But the constant snow is making it hard to clear the area. Local travel agencies and people who work in the tourism industry have been told to tell their clients about the current situation and to change their plans to go to the border areas.

State officials have told travelers and tourists to be very careful and follow all official weather and traffic warnings. Before making any plans to travel to the high-altitude border zones, visitors should check with the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department for the most recent information. The snow has made the Tsomgo Lake area look beautiful, but the safety of everyone traveling through the delicate Himalayan terrain is still the most important thing.
