A high-profile prototype leak has given us our first real-world look at Apple’s next flagship phone, the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It shows that the Dynamic Island is 25% to 35% smaller than it was before. The leaked pictures and CAD drawings that started going around on May 4 and 5, 2026, show that Apple has finally made the design changes people have been waiting for by moving some Face ID parts, like the infrared illuminator, right under the display. This breakthrough, which is said to have been made possible by advanced laser micro-drilling technology, makes it possible to make a much narrower pill-shaped cutout. This is the first major redesign of the front display since the iPhone 14 Pro, and it brings the device one step closer to a truly “all-screen” future.
The A20 Pro chip, which is built on TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process and promises up to 30% better power efficiency, is expected to be the first of its kind in the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The leak also suggests a revolutionary variable aperture main camera system that lets users mechanically control how much light comes in, giving them professional-level depth of field. Rumors say that a bigger 5,100mAh battery will be needed to support these power-hungry features. This could make the chassis a little thicker and the weight go over 240 grams. The official launch is set for September 2026, but this leak of a prototype shows that Apple is focusing on making the visuals “cleaner” and improving the hardware for photography to stay ahead of high-end competitors.
