He said yoga, which originated in India thousands of years ago, has today become a worldwide practice embraced by people across different cultures and countries.

Calling yoga one of India’s greatest contributions to humanity, the governor said it offers a simple, affordable and sustainable approach to preventive healthcare. He noted that modern lifestyles are increasingly marked by stress, anxiety, sedentary habits and lifestyle-related diseases, making yoga more relevant than ever.“In an era marked by stress, anxiety, lifestyle disorders, and sedentary habits, yoga offers a simple, cost-effective, and sustainable approach to preventive healthcare,” he said.Parnaik further observed that the importance of yoga has increased significantly in the post-pandemic period, where mental resilience, emotional balance and positive living have become essential aspects of daily life.Referring to this year’s United Nations theme for the 12th International Day of Yoga, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, the governor said the practice benefits people of all age groups by helping them maintain physical fitness, mental alertness and emotional well-being. He said yoga promotes independence, inner strength and a positive outlook throughout life.

Emphasising that yoga is more than just a physical exercise, he described it as a way of life that encourages good health, calmness of mind and overall personal development. The governor urged people, particularly the youth and senior citizens, to make yoga a regular part of their daily routine for a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. He also acknowledged the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in bringing yoga to the global stage. Parnaik noted that Modi’s proposal at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 led to the adoption of the International Day of Yoga with support from 177 countries. “Through sustained advocacy and global outreach, yoga has evolved into a worldwide movement promoting health, peace, and human unity,” the governor said.
