CM Sarma Reviews Zoo Redevelopment: Modern Hospital, Rescue Centre Planned

The Assam government has accelerated work on the ₹360-crore redevelopment of the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati, with the project aimed at transforming the facility into a modern centre for wildlife conservation, animal care and eco-tourism.

Reviewing the progress of the ongoing project, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the large-scale upgrade is focused on strengthening conservation infrastructure while significantly improving facilities for visitors.

As part of the redevelopment, the zoo will be equipped with a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, a dedicated wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, the world’s largest bird aviary and redesigned animal enclosures built to modern zoological standards.

According to the Chief Minister, the ambitious project was launched last year and nearly 27 per cent of the construction work has already been completed.

Calling it one of the government’s flagship initiatives, Sarma said the redevelopment aims to establish the Assam State Zoo as a world-class wildlife park with greater emphasis on conservation, scientific animal management and enhanced visitor experience.

He also instructed officials overseeing the project to study the functioning of leading zoological parks across the country and adopt best practices in wildlife management, habitat design and visitor services to ensure the upgraded zoo meets international standards.

Once completed, the modernisation project is expected to provide improved habitats for animals, strengthen rescue and veterinary care facilities and make the Assam State Zoo one of India’s premier zoological institutions.
