Arunachal Pradesh took a major step towards strengthening its fisheries sector as the Department of Fisheries launched a refrigerated transport service to market premium rainbow trout from Mechukha in Shi-Yomi district.
Fisheries Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu flagged off the first refrigerated vehicle carrying nearly 300 kg (3 quintals) of rainbow trout destined for markets in Aalo, Pasighat and Itanagar. Education Minister P.D. Sona, senior government officials, public representatives, and local fish farmers attended the event.
The initiative is aimed at improving cold-chain logistics, reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring that high-quality trout from the remote Himalayan region reaches consumers in fresh condition. The government believes the new transport facility will help farmers secure better prices while expanding access to larger markets.
Speaking at the programme, the ministers said scientific trout farming has emerged as a promising livelihood option for high-altitude communities and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing fisheries as a key contributor to the rural economy.
The Fisheries Department has been promoting modern aquaculture practices and investing in infrastructure for production, transportation and marketing. Officials said the successful launch of refrigerated transport highlights Mechukha’s growing importance as a premium trout-producing hub in the Northeast.
The event coincided with the Mechukha Trout Quest 2026, organised by the Department of Tourism on July 26 along the Yargyapchu River. The international angling competition attracted 56 participants from India, Thailand, Bhutan and other regions.
Competitions in fly fishing and lure fishing offered prizes of ₹5 lakh for first place and ₹3 lakh for second place in each category. A separate angling contest for local residents of Shi-Yomi district was also held at Pasang Sonam Lake near the international border, with prizes of ₹1 lakh and ₹50,000.
During the prize distribution ceremony, Wangsu said trout farming and sport fishing hold immense potential for boosting eco-tourism, creating employment opportunities and strengthening the local economy.
