AIIMS Guwahati celebrates 80th Independence Day

AIIMS Guwahati marked the 80th Independence Day today with the national flag being hoisted on its campus, followed by the National Anthem and a series of programmes commemorating the nation’s journey since independence.
The occasion brought together faculty, doctors, staff, workers and students in a shared expression of national pride and commitment to public service.
The programme commenced with the rendition of Vande Mataram, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag by Executive Director, AIIMS Guwahati, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Puranik.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Puranik paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose courage and sacrifices contributed to India’s independence. He remembered both prominent leaders and revolutionaries, including Ram Manohar Lohia, Durgabhabhi (Durgawati Devi), Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh, as well as the many unsung heroes of the freedom movement. He also recalled the contributions and sacrifices of freedom fighters and people from Assam, Nagaland and other parts of the Northeast.
Speaking about the vision of a strong and self-reliant India, Prof. Puranik emphasised the importance of unity in diversity and collective responsibility. He urged citizens to uphold truth and exercise responsibility while using and sharing information through the media. He also highlighted the importance of family bonds and spending time together.
Highlighting the role of AIIMS Guwahati in providing healthcare services in the region, Prof. Puranik spoke about the Institute’s growing contribution to healthcare and expressed solidarity with the people affected by floods in Assam. He appreciated the efforts of the Government of Assam and the AIIMS Guwahati family in extending support during the crisis. He called upon the younger generation to contribute to the progress and development of the country.
As part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and Mission Spandan, a Nasha Mukt Bharat Pledge was administered in collaboration with the Brahma Kumaris. The initiative aimed to create awareness about substance abuse and strengthen collective efforts towards building a healthy, addiction-free and value-based society.
The 7th edition of AIIMS Guwahati’s official bulletin, Episteme, was also released on the occasion. Staff members from various departments and workers of the Institute were felicitated for their contributions. The celebrations also featured cultural performances, including patriotic songs and dances.
