Nagaland University Research Offers Key Insights into Land Use Change and River Flow in Northeastern Himalayas

Nagaland University researchers conducted a significant GIS-based hydrological study examining the effects of geo-ecological conditions and human activities on runoff and river flow in the Northeastern Himalayan region. This research is crucial in addressing the hydrological impacts of land use changes on river discharge and environmental degradation. It introduces a four-zone runoff classification to aid in water resource management and flood mitigation. The findings aim to assist policymakers and local communities while serving as a model for similar areas. Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik highlighted the importance of this research for environmental security and resilience in fragile ecosystems. The study, led by Dr. K. Belho and others, was funded by Nagaland University and published in a peer-reviewed journal.
