A somber atmosphere enveloped the state of Assam today as the mortal remains of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Ramen Baruah were laid to rest with full military honours. The 34-year-old soldier, who dedicated his life to the service of the nation, died in the line of duty in the challenging high-altitude terrain of Ladakh. His final journey took place in his native Jarabari village, located under the Gaurisagar Police Station in Sivasagar, drawing hundreds of mourners who gathered to pay their respects to a fallen hero.
Ramen Baruah succumbed to extreme weather conditions during heavy snowfall on the night of April 18 while performing his duties in the Ladakh region. Known for his unwavering commitment, Baruah had joined the BSF in 2013. Before his posting to the high-altitude frontiers of Ladakh six months ago, he had served a lengthy tenure in Rajasthan. He was the third son of Kamal and Konmai Baruah, and his loss has left a profound void in a family and community that took immense pride in his service.
The fallen soldier’s mortal remains reached Guwahati via a special flight, after which they were transported to his ancestral home. The air in Jarabari was thick with emotion as villagers escorted the casket, draped in the national tricolor, amidst traditional rituals and slogans honoring his sacrifice. The military funeral included a traditional gun salute, a final tribute to a man who guarded the country’s borders in some of the most inhospitable environments on earth.
Expressing the grief of the entire state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to offer his condolences. He stated that the nation salutes Baruah’s courage and supreme sacrifice, extending heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family. The Chief Minister’s message echoed the sentiments of thousands of citizens who viewed Baruah not just as a soldier, but as a symbol of the state’s contribution to national security.
As the bugles sounded the ‘Last Post’ in Sivasagar, the legacy of Ramen Baruah remains etched in the hearts of his people. His sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the immense hardships faced by security personnel stationed in the northern frontiers.
