The highly anticipated Sikkimese feature film, Shape of Momo, celebrated its grand premiere on Thursday evening at the Vajra Cinema Hall in Gangtok. The special screening was attended by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang as the chief guest, alongside Madam Krishna Kumari Rai, senior legislators, and prominent dignitaries from both Sikkim and Nepal.
Written and directed by Tribeny Rai, an alumnus of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, the movie explores the deep-rooted impact of patriarchal expectations and lineage. Speaking before the screening, Rai shared that the narrative was deeply inspired by her own experiences growing up in a family of daughters. She also expressed her gratitude to the Chief Minister for cultivating a supportive and dignified creative ecosystem for independent artists in the region. Following the screening, Chief Minister Tamang felicitated the cast and crew to honor their brilliant contribution to cinema.
Shape of Momo captures the poignant journey of a young woman who leaves her city job to return to her Himalayan hometown. Through a realistic and restrained cinematic lens, the film masterfully navigates heavy themes of migration, belonging, and identity, using the shape of a momo as a metaphor for social conformity.
The feature film has already achieved significant international acclaim, securing 15 prestigious awards during its global festival run. Produced by Geeta Rai and Kislay under Dalle Khursani Productions, the film boasts a high-profile backing with filmmaker Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media handling distribution, and celebrated directors Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Payal Kapadia serving as executive producers. The universally praised film releases theatrically across commercial screens in India and Nepal today, May 29, 2026.
