Arunachal Pradesh Governor KT Parnaik has called for a collective effort involving families, educational institutions and communities to strengthen the fight against drug abuse in the state.
Addressing a felicitation programme at Lok Bhavan in Itanagar on Thursday, Parnaik said the campaign against drugs must become a people’s movement based on a shared sense of responsibility. The programme was organised to honour winners of declamation and painting competitions conducted earlier under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
The competitions were organised by the Governor’s Secretariat on the initiative of the governor in support of the nationwide campaign to eradicate drug abuse and promote a healthier and more responsible society.
Parnaik described drug abuse as one of the serious social challenges facing the country and said every aware citizen had an important role in protecting society from the harmful effects of substance abuse.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for a nationwide campaign against drugs, the governor said, “If the people of Arunachal Pradesh truly wish to honour the prime minister on his birthday, the most meaningful tribute would be to translate words into action by committing themselves to a drug-free society.”
The governor stressed that prevention remained the most effective approach and urged families, schools and other institutions to remain alert to early signs of substance abuse. He also called for the use of technology and intelligence-based monitoring systems to check the movement and distribution of narcotic substances.
