The Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress (APTC) has announced that it will not contest the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, protesting what it described as the “undemocratic” and “unjust” freezing of the party’s name and election symbol.
In a press statement issued on Friday, APTC State Convenor and MLA Sherman Ali said the party fully supports the decision taken by Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee regarding the matter. He expressed deep disappointment over the temporary suspension of the party’s name and electoral symbol for the by-election.
Stating that the move was unfair and contrary to democratic values, Sherman Ali said the party had decided to stay away from the electoral contest in Nagaon as a mark of protest.
The party also strongly criticized the Election Commission, accusing it of undermining democratic principles. According to the statement, the decision has not only affected the party but has also insulted the people of Assam.
The announcement marks a significant political development ahead of the Nagaon by-election, with the Trinamool Congress choosing to register its protest by abstaining from the contest.
