Dibrugarh marked a new milestone in Assam’s tea industry by hosting its maiden tea e-auction on September 25 at HM Resort. The inaugural auction witnessed the participation of 127 sellers and 55 buyers, reflecting strong interest from stakeholders across the sector.
A total of 258 lots comprising nearly 2.23 lakh kg of tea, including various grades and specialty teas, were put up for auction.
The e-auction is being conducted through Assam Chai Bazaar, a brokerless digital tea auction platform promoted by tea producers. The platform allows tea producers to connect directly with buyers across India while ensuring transparent digital price discovery.
Industry stakeholders said the platform offers tea growers an additional channel to access markets and enables buyers and sellers from different regions to trade on a common digital marketplace. Assam Chai Bazaar facilitates the sale of CTC, Orthodox, Green and specialty teas, broadening market access for producers.
The launch of the maiden e-auction in Dibrugarh is being seen as a significant step towards modernising Assam’s tea marketing ecosystem and strengthening digital trade mechanisms in the tea sector.
