Former All-Rounder Albie Morkel Appointed as CSK Assistant Coach

Ahead of the IPL 2027 season, former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel has taken on the role of assistant coach for Chennai Super Kings, becoming part of a revamped coaching structure headed by Zaheer Khan as the team aims for its sixth championship title. Morkel’s history with the franchise dates back to the very first IPL season in 2008, playing for the team until 2013 during which he featured in 92 matches and lifted the IPL trophy twice in 2010 and 2011, as well as the Champions League T20 in 2010. Recently in July, the 45-year-old was named head coach of the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20, succeeding Stephen Fleming. Morkel will team up with fellow assistant coach Gareth Batty, who stepped down from his role as Surrey head coach to join the franchise, and their immediate priority will be finalising the squad retention list ahead of the upcoming mini auction in December.
