Civil Society Bodies Seek Withdrawal of Prohibition in Dimapur

Several civil society organizations (CSOs) in Dimapur are advocating for the repeal of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, which they claim has been ineffective. These groups contend that despite the prohibition, illicit liquor remains prevalent, leading to health risks and loss of government revenue. Dr. Kahuka Sema, Secretary of the Committee for Repeal of NLTP Act, indicated that they intend to present their case to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio soon and believes that reasoned arguments will eventually persuade the government to lift the Act. However, this move faces opposition from the Dimapur Area Baptist Churches, which have cautioned against changing the law for the sake of revenue, citing socio-economic and health implications in a predominantly Christian state. The tension surrounding the NLTP Act highlights a significant conflict between public health, government revenue, and societal values in the region.
