India head coach Gautam Gambhir was a rare and much-awaited sight at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday, May 8, 2026 as he came to watch his former side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) crush the Delhi Capitals by eight wickets. Gambhir sat alongside national selector RP Singh and saw a clinical performance that had the “KKR DNA” he helped build – disciplined spin bowling and fearless batting. Finn Allen of New Zealand claimed the night with a historic maiden IPL hundred, Gambhir in attendance to celebrate. KKR chased a small target of 143 in just 14.2 overs with Allen’s unbeaten 100 off 47 balls which included 10 towering sixes ending the contest before the final strategic timeout.
The fireworks were provided by Allen but the groundwork was laid by Varun Chakaravarthy, the KKR spin unit. Chakaravarthy starred in a middle-overs choke as Delhi were restricted to 142/8 on a surface that gripped as the evening wore on. Pathum Nissanka (50) waged a lonely battle as his exact changes, supported by Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy, kept Capitals from gaining any momentum in the latter innings. The 98-run margin – albeit technically an eight-wicket win – showed a gulf in class that must have impressed Gambhir, the man who steered KKR to three titles as captain and mentor. It was KKR’s fourth straight win, a late-season surge that keeps their 2026 playoff hopes alive. For the national selectors in the stands, the performance gave them a wealth of data on the ‘clutch’ ability of established stars and rising international talents ahead of India’s next busy cycle.
