Starbucks Opens First Indian Corporate Tech Hub to Help Slash $2 Billion in Costs

Starbucks Corp. is rethinking its global technology strategy and opening its first corporate office in India as a strategic move to cut $2 billion in costs. The new facility, a dedicated technology hub, is expected to open in fiscal year 2027, which starts in October. Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan said in an internal memo to employees that the move is aimed at bringing critical technical jobs back in-house and reversing a past outsourcing strategy which heavily relied on third-party service providers. By removing these middlemen and their financial markups, the coffeehouse giant aims to establish a more direct, intimate connection to the teams creating its digital infrastructure. Starbucks aims to identify a particular site and begin local hiring later this year. The company’s move into international markets comes as it consolidates its footprint at home, recently relocating 20% of its tech workforce to Nashville and eliminating more than 2,000 corporate jobs worldwide since early last year.
