Assam’s endurance athlete Ankita Konwar has scripted history by becoming the first Assamese woman and the first woman from Northeast India to successfully complete an English Channel relay swim.
Konwar was part of an international relay team that crossed the English Channel from Dover to Calais in 13 hours and 5 minutes. The relay began at 1:30 a.m. and concluded at 2:35 p.m. (London time), with all team members receiving medals in recognition of their achievement.
The English Channel is widely regarded as one of the world’s most demanding open-water swimming routes due to its icy waters, strong currents, unpredictable tides, and rapidly changing weather conditions.
What makes Konwar’s accomplishment even more inspiring is that she learned swimming only three years ago. Since then, she has established herself as one of India’s prominent endurance athletes by completing a Full Ironman in Barcelona, competing in the T100 Triathlon in Dubai, and now adding the English Channel crossing to her growing list of achievements.
Speaking after the historic feat, Konwar described the crossing as a test of resilience, teamwork, and self-belief. She said it was a proud moment to carry the Indian flag while representing Assam and the Northeast on the global stage.
“If someone like me, who wasn’t even a swimmer once, can achieve this today, then anything is possible with consistency, determination, and courage,” she said.
Konwar also expressed hope that her journey would motivate more women and young athletes to dream big and challenge their limits. She added that preparations for her next endurance challenge are already underway.
