Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg Face Fresh Legal Trouble After Bail

Legal troubles may not be over for Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg, despite their release on bail in the Zubeen Garg death case. The Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has approached the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to both accused by the Gauhati High Court.

Amritprabha Mahanta, a co-singer of the late Zubeen Garg, was granted bail on October 9, while Sandipan Garg, the singer’s cousin, secured bail on October 16. With the SIT now contesting the High Court’s decision, the matter has reached the country’s highest court.

Earlier, on October 18, SIT chief Munna Prasad Gupta emphasized that the granting of bail did not amount to acquittal. He stated that the trial against both accused continues before the fast-track court and that legal proceedings remain ongoing.

Case No. 18/2025 is the principal criminal case investigating the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death. The charges reportedly include murder, criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and negligence.

Meanwhile, on September 29, two of Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers (PSOs), Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya, were granted bail in a separate disproportionate assets case. The Special Court reportedly cited procedural irregularities in their arrest while granting bail.

However, the two PSOs continue to face additional charges linked to the case and were not immediately released from custody as bail had not been secured in those matters.

Other accused in the case include festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, his manager Siddharth Sharma, and drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, who remain in judicial custody.
