The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has alleged that more than 7,900 names have been deleted from the electoral rolls in Mokokchung district during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), calling for a thorough verification to ensure that no eligible voter is deprived of the right to vote.
The allegation was raised at a press conference organised by the NPCC at Elate Hall in Mokokchung on Tuesday, under the direction of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), as part of its ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ campaign.
Pranav Shagotra, the AICC observer for the campaign, claimed that more than 13 crore names had been deleted from electoral rolls across the country. He alleged that over 7,900 names had been removed from Mokokchung district’s electoral rolls, which had a total of 1,56,302 voters.
Shagotra urged Congress workers and members of the public to verify electoral data at the block, booth, district and Assembly constituency levels. He said the party would continue its campaign until the alleged irregularities were addressed.
NPCC president and Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir called on Booth-Level Agents (BLAs) and party workers to conduct house-to-house verification to establish whether the deletions were genuine. He stressed the need to check the electoral rolls on the ground to identify eligible voters whose names might have been removed.
DCC Mokokchung president I. Temsu Jamir said the deleted names had been categorised under different reasons, including permanent migration, absence or untraceability, death and other causes. He said the party was still examining the available data and that a clearer picture would emerge after physical verification.
The Congress leaders said the Election Commission had opened a window for house-to-house revision, allowing eligible voters to seek the restoration of their names in the electoral rolls. They appealed to residents to participate in the verification process and check their electoral details to ensure that genuine voters were not excluded.
The party maintained that the verification exercise was necessary to establish the accuracy of the deletions and safeguard the voting rights of eligible citizens. However, the figures cited at the press conference were allegations made by Congress leaders, and the extent and reasons for the deletions remain subject to verification.
The NPCC also announced that the opposition INDIA bloc would organise agitations in Delhi on October 30 and 31, followed by a public rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The programmes are part of the bloc’s campaign for democratic rights and accountability over alleged electoral irregularities.
NPCC general secretary and Mokokchung district in-charge Akuonuo Miachieo was also present at the press conference.
The Congress’s demand for verification comes amid concerns over the accuracy of electoral rolls and the need to ensure that all eligible citizens retain their right to participate in elections. The party has urged voters in Mokokchung to check their names and cooperate with the verification process as the revision exercise continues.
