Nagaland Congress to hold 45-day agitation opposing changes to MGNREGA

Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has initiated a statewide protest against the repeal and renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The Opposition claims this dismantles a crucial rights-based livelihood program for rural India. AICC secretary Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka criticized the hurried passage of the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission–Gramin (VBG RAM-G) Act, asserting it replaced MGNREGA without proper debate and weakened its provisions. He noted Nagaland’s low MGNREGA wage rates and accused the government of underfunding and delaying payments over the past 11 years. The 45-day agitation will consist of media conferences, fasts, outreach programs, memoranda submissions, and rallies to gather public support for the employment guarantee scheme.
