Rare Visitors: Four Black-Necked Cranes Spotted in West Kameng’s Chug Valley

Four black-necked cranes, including three adults and one juvenile, were sighted together for the first time in Arunachal Pradesh’s Chug Valley. Senior Veterinary Officer Dr. Darge highlighted this significant observation, noting that past records typically included only pairs or trios. Biologists speculate that one adult crane may have been separated from a pair last winter, during which a female sustained injuries from feral dogs but was later rescued and relocated. The current influx of cranes may allow for the reunion of the separated pair. Divisional Forest Officer Obang Tayeng indicated the cranes’ increased presence is a positive ecological sign, while Range Forest Officer Lobsang Sunickjee reported the forestry department’s efforts to protect them from threats and collaborate with local communities to ensure their safety.
